March 28th: Alert Day

March 28th: Alert Day

Are You at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes?

One in three American adults is at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, which is why Marissa Kent Nutrition is participating in American Diabetes Association Alert Day®. On March 28 we encourage you to take a quick (and anonymous) one-minute Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test to find out if you’re at risk.

An estimated 86 million American adults have prediabetes, which means they have blood glucose (sugar) that’s higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is reversible, and knowing your risk is the first step.

Please make sure to mark your calendar for American Diabetes Association Alert Day on March 28 and take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test.

Walking Side by Side- Meeting you where you are

Mar 202017 by marissa // Leave a Comment

I have had a few challenges this month in not only counseling, but teaching and determining stages of change.  We all have a readiness to change and it may not always be in-line with where we “should” be, but that doesn’t mean we cannot change.  Behavior change is the hardest part about managing weight, illness, finances, you name it.  Being a health practitioner that believes this is the core of healing yourself, I have to meet people where they are.

My practice, as some of you may know, is not about providing daily recipes or meal plans that tell you exactly what to eat and what time to eat. It is about finding out what is holding you back, finding your readiness in addition to educating you on how to make a change with food or food behavior where you feel ready.  The goals very well may be to eat more often or eat more fruits and vegetables, but it may also be to go to bed earlier or get a manicure.  The latter help you provide self care in this environment of 24 hour work days.

Sometimes we have to make a change due to medical necessity and it is still hard.  Sometimes our doctors or family members want it more than we do and sometimes we just do not know how to start. Having someone to walk the walk with, will help in more ways than you can imagine.  Someone who understands your thoughts about food, your medical need, and help you determine readiness is the best place to start.
